This project started as an idea, one of those too-much-whiskey-but-just-enough-Gary-Winogrand kind of ideas. I decided to set myself the project of only shooting medium format negatives in a 60+ year old folding camera while traveling in December and January. This meant that I would have to visualize the frames before ever exposing them, and in addition I would only make a few images. Over the course of 4 weeks I exposed 9 rolls of film making a total of 72 images.

In addition to shooting slowly and methodically, I also developed the film while traveling. Which was fun, but difficult to keep the negatives clean. I can only imagine what it was like for photojournalists back in film's heyday.

Below are some of the images I liked the most. They are in 6x9 cropping, to match the original 6x9cm frame size they were captured in.

So, what's the Winogrand connection? As many know he was a prolific shooter, and as he aged he became obsessed with the act of shooting but less and less interested in dealing with the images that he made. By the time of his death he had over 2500 rolls of film undeveloped. In a digital world, shooting like that is even easier than it was for Winogrand. This project was my antecedent to that kind of image making. To slow down, make images you pre-visualize, and process them by hand to explore your results on a regular basis.
